Scott and Caroline Greenhalgh married in 1988 and have two adult daughters and two grandchildren.
They have lived at The Stewards House since 2003. Scott is an avid gardener, and under his guidance, the garden has evolved into a beautiful space, featuring a mixed herbaceous border.
The property’s previous owners had a passion for trees, resulting in an eclectic range of species that thrive on the grounds today.
In addition to maintaining its natural beauty, Scott and Caroline are deeply committed to improving the property’s biodiversity by enhancing and creating new habitats.
Their work includes planting mixed native hedgerows, creating ‘scrapes’ to encourage wildlife, and adding many more trees to complement the existing variety. The property also supports rare species such as the English Field Cricket, and the couple continues to focus on preserving and enriching the natural environment for wildlife. The lake, which is fed by a natural stream, further enhances the property’s ecosystem, providing a valuable habitat for a variety of birds and aquatic species.
At South Downs Retreats, guests can enjoy the charm of the couple’s small collection of animals, including two Falabella miniature horses—Apricot and Muffin—Cotswold Legbar chickens, a large flock of sheep, and their three dogs: Mally, Hero, and Apricot.
